Josh Hubbard battles VJ Edgecombe as No. 8 seed Mississippi State meets No. 9 seed Baylor in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday.
Starting off the second day of the Round of 64 in the NCAA Men’s Championship, No. 8-seeded Mississippi State will take on No. 9-seeded Baylor at the Lenovo Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, in the East Region on Friday afternoon. The No. 9-seeded Bears finished their season with a 19-14 overall record and a 10-10 record coming out of the Big 12 Conference. They lost their season final to Houston before opening up their conference tournament against Kansas State with a huge 70-56 win. They bowed out of the tournament in the next round with a loss to the No. 9 ranked team in the nation, Texas Tech, in the quarterfinals.

Baylor has had ups and downs this season, especially being led by a pair of freshman guards. VJ Edgecombe is averaging 15.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 2.1 steals per game. Robert Wright III averaged 11.3 points and 4.3 assists. However, neither one of them accounts as the leading scorer and rebounder on the team, which is Norchad Omier at 15.9 points and 10.9 rebounds per game.
The No. 8-seeded Bulldogs finished their season with a 21-12 record overall and an 8-10 record against teams in the SEC, the hardest conference in the country. They opened their tournament with a win against LSU in the first round by 29 points, 91-62, before heading to the second round.
They were beaten by Missouri, the former No. 21-ranked team in the nation, and awaited Sunday to figure out where they would play in the NCAA Tournament. Josh Hubbard leads Mississippi State on the court this season. He is averaging 18.7 points per game, over seven points more than the next closest person, with 2.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game.
