Southern Illinois (8-11) has bounced back from a 0-5 start in Missouri Valley Conference play with three consecutive wins and on Wednesday night welcomes Murray State (10-9) to the Banterra Center. The Racers have lost their last two games to fall to 4-4 in The Valley, while the Salukis are now 3-5 after their rough opening to their conference slate. Southern Illinois hasn’t gone to the NCAA tournament since a six-year span from 2002-07 and its last postseason appearance was in the 2008 NIT. Murray State played in the 2022 edition of March Madness but endured the program’s first 20-loss season in 2023-24.

The Salukis shut down visiting Northern Iowa in the first half, opening a large lead and never relinquishing it in a 73-49 rout on Saturday. Kennard Davis Jr. finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds, while Ali Dibba added 14 points. Dibba scored 15.9 points per game, Davis gets 14.5 points a night and Jarrett Hensley averages 11.6 points and 5.5 boards.

The Racers never got into an offensive rhythm on Saturday in a 74-61 loss to visiting Bradley, the leader in The Valley standings. AJ Ferguson had 12 points to lead the club, while JaCobi Wood and Kylen Milton each dropped in 11. Wood averages 12.7 points and 5.1 assists, Milton nets 12.2 points per game and Ferguson posts 11.4 points and 5.3 rebounds an outing.

Southern Illinois is 23-19 against Murray State and has won the last five meetings, including a home-and-home sweep last season that included a 60-58 win at Murray State and a 72-68 victory in Carbondale.
