San Francisco (25-9) was named the top seed in the NIT’s San Francisco Regional and on Sunday hosts unseeded Loyola Chicago (23-11) in a second-round matchup at War Memorial at The Sobrato Center in San Francisco. The Dons reached the semifinals of the West Coast Conference tournament before falling to eventual champion Gonzaga in the semifinals while the Ramblers dropped an Atlantic 10 Conference tourney semifinal to top seed and eventual champion VCU. Loyola Chicago was one of two road teams to advance in the San Francisco Regional’s first round.

San Francisco coughed up a 14-point second-half lead but recovered to reclaim the advantage with 5:30 remaining and held off visiting Utah Valley 79-70 on Wednesday night. Malik Thomas finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds while Ryan Beasley put up 19 points and six assists. Thomas is the team’s top scorer at 19.4 points per game, but second-leading scorer Marcus Williams is sidelined over an eligibility issue. Tyrone Riley IV averages 9.6 points and 6.0 boards.

The Ramblers led by as much as 15 in the second half but needed Des Watson’s free throws with 42 seconds left to help hold off San Jose State in a 73-70 win on Wednesday night. Watson finished with 24 points while Miles Rubin added 14. Watson scores a team-best 13.2 points per game, with Jayden Dawson getting 13.0 poins a night and Rubin averaging 9.3 points and 5.4 rebounds.

Loyola Chicago is 4-3 all-time against USF, winning the last three meetings, most recently on Jan. 6, 2022. It is their second meeting in NIT play, with the Dons beating the Ramblers in the 1949 NIT championship game. Chris Gerlufsen is 68-34 in his third season at San Francisco, which lost in the NIT first round in 2024. Drew Valentine has an 81-50 mark in his fourth season coaching Loyola Chicago, also a first-round loser in the 2024 NIT.
