Rhode Island hopes to improve to 9-0 to start the season in one of its best starts in more than a half-century when it hosts Providence.
Rhode Island looks to continue its hot start to the season and stay undefeated when it hosts Providence on Saturday. The Rams are 8-0 this season and has six of those wins at home. Rhode Island is coming off two of its closest margins of victory of the season and most recently beat Yale at home 84-78. The last time the Rams were 8-0 was 77 years ago. That record wasn’t always guaranteed as the Bulldogs were up seven points with less than a minute in the first half but David Green shifted the momentum quickly hitting a couple of threes to cut the halftime lead to just one point.

Sebastian Thomas fed off that momentum and improved tremendously on his two-point first half performance by scoring 18 in the second half and completely changing the narrative of the game. Rhody scored 50 in the second compared to 34 in the first. With the performance, Thomas hit an important milestone of reaching 1,000 career points. Even with the improvement in the second half, the Rams were down five until a 14-2 run changed everything. What really helped Rhode Island was that they were 27 of 30 from the free throw line needing every point. The Rams should be the favorites at home against Providence this afternoon.
This is Providence’s first true road game as the Friars are 6-3 and are 0-3 on neutral sites. After getting swept in a trio of games in the 2024 Battle 4 Atlantis, Providence bounced back in a big 83-64 victory against BYU in the Big 12 Big East Battle. It was the Friars first win in program history against BYU. Jabri Adbur-Rahim led Providence there with 21 points and Bryce Hopkins was also a big factor scoring 16 with five rebounds and a team-high four assists. Even more impressive was this was Hopkins season debut. This should be a close game but it’s going to be tough to bring down the top team in the Atlantic 10 on the road.
