Some of the country’s best young talent will be on display today in this matchup between the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and Purdue Boilermakers. 

Conference play at the college level is officially underway, with an exciting Big Ten matchup taking place today in New Jersey. The Rutgers Scarlet Knights are slated to host the Purdue Boilermakers at Jersey Mike’s Arena this evening. Despite having a pair of the best freshmen in the entire country, Rutgers has overall struggled on the season. The Scarlet Knights are on a two-game skid and 8-7 on the season, including a 1-3 mark in Big Ten play. With that in mind, Rutgers is 7-1 at home and plays much better in front of its home crowd.

Purdue has been a premier collegiate program for the past few years and is projected to be as such again this season. The Boilermakers are 11-4 overall and 3-1 in conference play while sitting on a three-game winning streak. Interestingly enough Purdue is 1-2 on the road this season which is something to consider entering today. 

Between Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey, Rutgers has two freshmen who will be one-and-done college players with a chance to be selected top-three in the 2025 NBA Draft. Being led by two young players has led to inconsistency this season, but there’s no question the Scarlet Knights can compete with anyone. Purdue is currently ranked and led by Trey Kaufman-Renn, Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer. The Boilermakers aren’t the same team without Zach Edey, who now plays for the Memphis Grizzlies, but this is still a team that could make noise in March. 

Following this contest, Rutgers will play yet another game against a team that is currently ranked with a home game against the UCLA Bruins next on the schedule. Meanwhile, Purdue will host Nebraska on Sunday back at home.
