Big Ten basketball play continues on Wednesday night as Northwestern hosts Rutgers in men’s basketball action.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights will travel to Illinois on Wednesday for a Big Ten basketball battle against the Northwestern Wildcats at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Scarlet Knights are currently toward the bottom of the standings at 16th with a Big Ten record of 3-6 and an overall record of 10-10. The team has now lost two games in a row with the most recent being a tough 81-74 defeat by No. 8 Michigan State over the weekend at Madison Square Garden. Jordan Derkack put up a season-high 26 points against a very strong Spartan defense and Ace Bailey was just one basket away from joining Derkack in the 20-point range, finishing the game with 18 points. Bailey also missed a double-double by just one rebound, finishing with nine to lead the team on the boards. Michigan State held Rutgers to just 33 percent from the field and 30 percent from long range.

The Wildcats are just two spots above the Scarlet Knights, also holding a Big Ten record of 3-6, but have a slight edge overall with a record of 12-8. On Sunday, Northwestern traveled to take on No. 17 Illinois, falling in an 83-74 defeat to drop to 0-6 on the road. Nick Martinelli and Jalen Leach both scored 17 points to lead the Wildcats offensively and Ty Berry came off the bench to add an additional 10 points to the scoreboard. Illinois dominated on the boards, but Berry pulled down six rebounds to lead the Wildcats in rebounding.

Northwestern and Rutgers have met 16 times in their history and the series is all tied up at 8-8. The teams met once last season and the game was competitive, but ultimately went in Rutgers’ favor with a narrow 63-60 victory at home.
