Stony Brook will open up conference play in the CAA against Monmouth at the OceanFirst Bank Center on Thursday.

Stony Brook will travel to West Long Branch, New Jersey, on Thursday night in a Coastal Athletic Association conference battle in men’s college basketball. In New Jersey, they will take the court at OceanFirst Bank Center against Monmouth. The Stony Brook Seawolves (4-9, 0-0) come into this game with a 4-9 record through 13 non-conference games. They won two of those four games in the last five games they played in, beating Rider on the road, 72-55, and Maine at home, 74-72, in a close contest.

In that same stretch, they lost by eight points to Air Force, two points against Marist at home, and seven points on the road against UAlbany. Joe Octave, a senior guard, leads Stony Brook on the court this season. The 6-foot-4 guard from Gardena, California, averages 14.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game.

The Monmouth Hawks (2-11, 0-0) also played 13 non-conference games this season, but they have only won two of those 13 games. They won one of those games in December against Fairfield at home, 88-74, led by Abdi Bashir Jr, who dropped 27 points. That was their only win in the four-game month, losing to Lehigh, Princeton, and No. 2-ranked Auburn, all on the road.

Their only other win of the season in the first month of play came against Seton Hall by 12 points, led again by Abdi Bashir Jr’s 28-point performance. Bashir Jr has played in all 13 games and is averaging a team-high 21.1 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game. He is followed by junior guard Madison Durr, who is averaging 10.4 points and 3.5 assists per game.
