Archrivals clash at the Stroh Center as Toledo makes the short trip down Interstate 75 to face Bowling Green

Toledo (10-8) has won four straight Mid-American Conference regular-season titles and on Friday night the Rockets make the 25-mile trek down Interstate 75 to meet archrival Bowling Green (7-11) at the Stroh Center. Toledo comes off a loss and is 4-2 in MAC play while the Falcons have lost two straight and are 2-4 in conference action. Despite their regular-season success of late, the Rockets haven’t been to the NCAA tournament since 1980 and missed the postseason last year after receiving an NIT bid in 2023. Bowling Green hasn’t gone to the Big Dance since 1968 and its last postseason appearance was in the 2021 College Basketball Invitational.

Toledo took an 83-64 defeat from visiting Kent State on Tuesday night as the visiting Golden Flashes took control with 9-of-11 shooting from 3-point range in the first half. Sonny Wilson and Javan Simmons scored 19 points apiece in the loss. Wilson gets 15.2 points per game, with Sam Lewis putting up 14.3 points a night and Simmons averaging 12.6 points and 5.8 rebounds.

The Falcons were on the wrong end of a 13-0 second-half run that turned the tide in their 84-76 loss at Miami (Ohio) on Tuesday. Derrick Butler and Trey Thomas finished with 17 points each, with Thomas adding seven assists. Marcus Johnson scores 16.4 points per game and Butler nets 14.3 points per outing, with Jamai Felt averaging 5.3 points and 5.9 boards.

The Rockets lead the rivalry 98-84 in a series that dates to 1916 and the teams split last season’s meeting, with Toledo getting an 88-72 win at home on Jan. 27 and Bowling Green claiming a 76-68 victory on its home court on Feb. 23. Tod Kowalczyk is 288-189 in his 15th season with the Rockets while Todd Simon has a 27-25 mark in his second year leading the Falcons.
