St. John’s looks to inch closer to its first Big East regular-season title since 1992 when it hosts UConn on Sunday

No. 10 St. John’s (23-4) leads the Big East Conference with a 14-2 record, two-and-a-half games ahead of Creighton entering play on Sunday. The Red Storm will take on UConn (18-8) at Madison Square Garden on Sunday afternoon looking to complete a season sweep of the two-time defending national champions. The Huskies are 10-5 in Big East play and are 6-3 on the road while St. John’s is 16-0 at home, including seven wins at the Garden. The Red Storm picked up a 68-62 win at UConn on Feb. 7 when the teams met the first time.

On Wednesday night, St. John’s demolished DePaul in an 82-58 road win in Chicago. Deivon Smith paced the attack with 18 points while Kadary Richmond added 17 as the team breezed without injured star RJ Luis Jr., out with a groin issue. Luis’ status is unknown for Sunday and he leads the team, scoring 17.6 points per game. Zuby Ejiofor averages 13.9 points and 8.1 rebounds while Richmond puts up 12.7 points and 5.1 assists a night.

UConn bounced back from a loss at Seton Hall, coming back from 14 down with 11:58 to play for a 66-59 victory over visiting Villanova on Tuesday night. Liam McNeeley dropped 20 points in the win while Solo Ball and Tarris Reed Jr. each contributed 13. McNeeley leads the club at 15.4 points per game with Ball posting 14.7 points a night. Reed averages 9.2 points and 6.9 boards and Hassan Diarra books 8.2 points and 5.8 assists per outing.

The Red Storm are 38-34 in the all-time series after snapping the Huskies’ run of four straight wins earlier this month. Rick Pitino is 43-17 in his second season coaching at St. John’s, which last went to the NCAA tournament in 2019 and hasn’t won the Big East regular-season title since 1992. Dan Hurley has a 159-66 mark in his seventh season at UConn, with four straight Big Dance appearances and back-to-back national titles in 2023 and 2024.
