Utah and Butler will begin play in the College Basketball Crown on Monday afternoon in Las Vegas.

A new postseason tournament begins on Monday as the Utah Utes take on the Butler Bulldogs in the inaugural College Basketball Crown at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The Utes come into the tournament right at .500 with an overall record of 16-16 on the season. The team is currently on a three-game losing streak with the most recent being an 87-72 loss to UCF in the Big 12 tournament. Keanu Daws led the Utes offensively with 21 points while Lawson Lovering and Gabe Madsen joined him in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Dawes also led on the boards with 15 rebounds to earn a double-double in the loss. The team finished the game shooting 39 percent from the field, but only shot 15 percent from long range.

The Bulldogs were eliminated from Big East play after dropping a 78-57 game to St. John’s in the conference tournament two weeks ago. The team now comes into this week’s postseason tournament with an overall record of 14-19 and will look to improve on that with a win Monday. Against the Red Storm, Patrick McCaffery led the scoring with 16 points while Jahmyl Telfort added 11 points and Finley Bizjack contributed 10 to round out the double digit scorers. The team only shot 34 percent from the field and 30 percent from beyond the arc which simply were not strong enough numbers to compete with the strength of St. John’s.

Utah and Butler have met a total of three times in their history and the Bulldogs hold a 3-0 record in the all-time series. The last meeting took place in 2017 and resulted in an 81-69 win.
