Loyola Chicago looks to shake off a miserable trip to Hawaii when it hosts VCU in its Atlantic 10 opener on Saturday.

Loyola Chicago (9-4) returns to the court for the first time since going 0-3 at the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu over the Christmas holiday, hosting VCU (10-4) at Gentile Arena in Chicago on Saturday afternoon. The Rams dropped their Atlantic 10 Conference opener on Tuesday while this is the conference opener for the Ramblers. VCU reached the NIT quarterfinals last spring, finishing the season with a 24-14 mark. Loyola lost in the first round of the same tournament after winning the A-10 regular season title. The Rams last played in the NCAA tournament in 2023 while the Ramblers were last part of March Madness in 2022.

Phillip Russell scored a season-high 26 points for VCU on Tuesday, but a late bucket lifted host St. Bonaventure to a 77-75 victory. Joe Bamisile added 13 points in the loss. Bamisile gets 17.0 points, Max Shulga gets 16.5 points a night and Jack Clark averages 6.8 points and 6.8 rebounds.

Loyola closed out in Hawaii with a 71-68 loss to Murray State in the seventh-place game. Terence Harcum and KyeRon Lindsay each scored 16 points in the defeat. Sheldon Edwards Jr. scores 12.1 points per game, Des Watson drops 11.6 points an outing and Francis Nwaokorie averages 6.9 points and 6.4 boards.

The Rams have never lost to the Ramblers, winning both previous meetings, including a 74-67 victory at home on Jan. 23. Ryan Odom is 34-18 in his second season at VCU while Drew Valentine has a 67-43 mark in his fourth year at Loyola.
