Heading into this game both Notre Dame (10-12) and Virginia Tech (10-13) need a bounce back win. The Fighting Irish have lost two straight games after winning back-to-back games for just the third time this season. Both losses came by a combined 13 total points and on the road. The Hokies are coming off a tough loss to Southern Methodist and have lost four of the last six games overall. This is the first and only game between the Fighting Irish and the Hokies in the regular season in college basketball, with both teams trying to get into a rhythm down the stretch.

The Fighting Irish will lean on sophomore Markus Burton who has been back in the lineup for a month. He has scored 20 or more points in seven of nine games since coming back, averaging 22.0 points, 2.3 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.8 steals per game on 46.8% shooting from three.

Tae Davis and Braeden Shrewsberry, the coaches son, have tried to balance the offense with Burton out of the lineup. Davis is averaging 15.5 points per game while Shrewsberry is chipping in 14.3 points per game.

For the Hokies this season they are led by junior Toibu Lawal. He is leading the team with 12.8 points and 6.7 rebounds per game on 57.4% shooting. This season the Hokies are undefeated in three games when Lawal scores over 20 points and 3-1 when he finishes with a double-double. When Lawal plays well, the Hokies are as competitive as any team in the ACC.
