The Virginia Union Panthers will take a road trip on Saturday afternoon for a game against the Virginia State Trojans at the Multipurpose Center in a double-header that follows the women’s game. The Panthers come into Saturday’s game with an overall record of 7-8 and a conference record of 1-2 which puts the team in fifth place in the CIAA Northern Division standings. The team’s last game took place last weekend and resulted in an 81-74 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas on the road. Even behind a 29-point team-leading performance from Jonathan King, the team came up short. King also pulled down a team-leading 14 rebounds to earn a double-double. The Panthers struggled with their long range shooting, finishing the game at just 16 percent.

The Panthers are undefeated in conference play at 6-0 for a spot atop the CIAA Northern Division standings. Virginia State has now won eight games in a row with the most recent being a 74-68 win over Winston-Salem State on Thursday night at home. Jacob Cooper paced four Trojans to double digit finishes with his 18-point performance. Jayson Harris pulled down eight rebounds to lead the team on the boards and added seven points to the scoreboard in the win. The team finished the game shooting 44 points from the field, but struggled from long range, going just 4-for-19.

Virginia Union and Virginia State have now met a total of 30 times and the Panthers hold a 20-10 lead in the series. The Panthers have won nine straight games against the Trojans with the most recent game being a narrow 64-63 win last season.
