Ohio State returns to action in men’s college basketball a week after knocking off a ranked foe, as it hosts Youngstown State on Monday night.
Ohio State (1-0) got its season off to a strong start with a win over a ranked opponent a week ago and returns to the court on Monday night when Youngstown State (1-0) comes to Value City Arena in Columbus. The Buckeyes finished strong last season after coach Chris Holtmann was fired on Feb. 14, going 8-3 under interim coach Jake Diebler on their way to the NIT quarterfinals, finishing 22-14. Diebler landed the job on a permanent basis. Ohio State’s last NCAA tournament bid came in 2022. The Penguins haven’t been to the NCAA tournament since moving to Division I in 1981 and assistant coach Ethan Faulkner moved up to the first chair after Jerrod Calhoun left for Utah State last spring.

The Buckeyes opened their season with an 80-72 win over then-No. 19 Texas in the Hall of Fame Series in Las Vegas on Nov. 4. They led by as much as 15 in the first half and their advantage never got below three en route to the win. Returning junior Bruce Thornton scored 20 points, while San Diego State transfer Micah Parrish added 17.
Youngstown State’s opener scheduled for Nov. 4 against Westminster was postponed and the Penguins won their delayed first game on Saturday night with an 80-60 romp over host Chicago State. Sacred Heart transfer Nico Galette finished with 20 points and nine rebounds and JUCO transfer Juwan Maxey debuted with 14 points off the bench. Returning sophomore Gabe Dynes went for 11 points and blocked seven shots.
Ohio State is 5-0 all-time against Youngstown State, with all of the games played in Columbus. The most recent meeting was a 75-56 Buckeyes victory on Dec. 18, 2018.
