When it was announced Cam Newton of the New England Patriots tested positive for COVID-19, the game seemed destined to be postponed for weeks. That's what happened when multiple players on the Tennessee Titans tested positive and their game with the Pittsburgh Steelers had to be postponed until October 25. The positive tests didn't pass beyond Newton for the Patriots. The spread was limited on the Chiefs side to one player, practice squad quarterback Jordan Ta'amu. Because of the (so far) limited spread, the game was rescheduled just a day later after it was reported that league was trying to get this game in on a Tuesday.

The last NFL game to be played on a Tuesday actually wasn't that long ago. The Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings played on a Tuesday in 2010 because of a winter storm that left more than a foot of snow in Philly. The time before that was all the way back in 1946 against the New York Giants and yes a team called the Boston Yanks. Boy, would that not fly in today's Red Sox-Yankees rivalry. Tuesday Night Football won't happen this time but we will get a double-header of games on Monday night as the regularly scheduled Monday Night Football Game between the Atlanta Falcons and Green Bay Packers was pushed back an hour. Here is a preview of the first game of the night.

The entire NFL community and beyond is wishing Cam Newton and every one infected with the coronavirus the quickest possible recovery. It's disappointing though to see a halt into his resurrection from injury in New England. Newton has bounced back by leading the Patriots' offensive scheme heavily reliant on the run game. Newton is leading his team with four rushing touchdowns and is second in rushing yards with 149, only behind RB Sony Michel. With Newton out, the Patriots are going to have to rely on their running backs even more.

Before Newton was ruled out, the Patriots were already a big underdog against the best team in the league, the defending Super-Bowl Champs Kansas City Chiefs. They were a 7-point dog and now that has creeped up to 11 points. The last time the Patriots under Bill Belichick were double-digit underdogs was against the "Greatest Show on Turf" St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI.

Brian Hoyer is starting in place for Cam on Monday night. Jarrett Stidham, drafted in 2019 in the fourth round, was going to be the starter before Newton ever got to Foxborough. He has slid down to third on the depth chart mostly because of a groin injury that has allowed Hoyer to gain more practice reps.

Besides, Hoyer knows a lot more about being a back up, especially in New England. Hoyer started his career in there in 2009 backing up Tom Brady. He did it again in 2017 and '18. This year is Hoyer's third stint with the team. Even with all of his experience, he is not going to be able to hang on Patrick Mahomes' level. To be fair, no one can. Instead, Hoyer's top priority is to hold on to the ball and manage the game. Oh and hand off the ball rock most of the game. That's exactly where Rex Burkhead comes in.

All he did last week against the Las Vegas Raiders is rush for two scores and grabbed another one through the air. They're going to have to rely on their bell-cow back even more because he only rushed for 49 yards in that game. Michel will be their go to when they need to move it down the field. The Patriots have one of the best running and defensive units in the league.

Because here's the scouting report on the Kansas City Chiefs. They're really good. What else do you need to know about them? They held the reigning MVP Lamar Jackson to just 97 yards passing while sacking him four times on Monday Night Football last week. The Patriots win this game by winning time of possession by pounding the football, while their elite defense backs them up. The Chiefs win if they show up to the game.

Preview was created before Cam Newton tested positive for COVID-19.
