Aaron Rodgers looks for a better start than his short-lived New York Jets debut when the San Francisco 49ers visit on Monday night.
It would be hard to blame New York Jets fans for being wary of their season opener on Monday night. It was a year ago when newly acquired quarterback Aaron Rodgers made his debut only to have his season end just four plays in — at home on Monday Night Football. This season, the Jets again open at home on a Monday night when the San Francisco 49ers visit MetLife Stadium. The 49ers come off an overtime loss in the Super Bowl, but managed to get deals done for training camp hold-in Brandon Aiyuk and holdout Trent Williams.

The Jets surrendered 64 sacks last season, tied for fourth-most in the NFL, so they revamped their offensive line in the offseason with All-Pro left tackle Tyron Smith and former Baltimore Ravens Morgan Moses and John Simpson. They also drafted Olu Fashanu from Penn State with the 11th overall pick. Wide receiver Garrett Wilson gives Rodgers a weapon in the passing game and running back Breece Hall broke out for 1,585 all-purpose yards last season.
Brock Purdy returns for his third season after leading San Francisco to a Super Bowl bid in Year 2. He has running back Christian McCaffrey and a deep receiving corps led by Deebo Samuel St., Aiyuk and tight end George Kittle. The team boasted the second-best offense and No. 8 defense last season.
The 49ers won’t have defensive end Yetur Gross-Matos (knee) or linebacker Dee Winters (ankle), while safety Talanoe Hufanga (knee) is doubtful and guard Aaron Banks (finger) and McCaffrey (calf, Achilles’) are questionable. Linebacker Zaire Barnes (ankle) and guard Wes Schweitzer (hand) are out for New York.
The Jets struggled offensively without Rodgers, extending the NFL’s longest active postseason drought to 13 seasons with a 7-10 record. New York last reached the playoffs in 2010 and haven’t had a winning record since going 10-6 in 2015.
