New England Patriots embark on the post-Belichick era with a road game at Cincinnati on Sunday
For the first time this century, the New England Patriots take the field with someone other than Bill Belichick under the headset. Jerod Mayo makes his debut as head coach of the Pats after the 24-year tenure of Belichick ended in January. Mayo spent five seasons on New England’s staff as a linebackers coach after an eight-year playing career with the club from 2008-15. The Patriots visit the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday for the season opener for both squads. The Bengals look for a return to the postseason after a 9-8 campaign a season ago left them on the outside looking in. Quarterback Joe Burrow is healthy after missing seven games last season but there are some early season concerns at the wide receiver position.

Veteran Jacoby Brissett beat out No. 3 overall pick Drake Maye for the starting quarterback job to open the season for New England. Brissett last started a game in 2022, when he was with the Cleveland Browns and 11 starts. He spent last season with the Washington Commanders, playing in three games and attempting 23 passes. The Patriots won’t have guard Sidy Sow (ankle) in Cincinnati.
Cincinnati listed wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, who held in during training camp while seeking a new contract, as questionable while wideout Tee Higgins is doubtful because of a hamstring injury. The uncertainty prompted the Bengals on Saturday to elevate Kendric Pryor from the practive squad. Defensive tackle Kris Jenkins (thumb) and offensive lineman Amarius Mims (pectoral) are out for Sunday.
The teams last met on Christmas Eve in 2022 in Foxboro, Massachusetts, with Cincinnati taking a 22-18 win.
