The Russell Wilson era in Pittsburgh begins this Sunday in the Steelers’ season opener against the Atlanta Falcons.
This was a very busy offseason for the Pittsburgh Steelers. After their offense struggled during the 2023 season, the team moved on from 2022 first round pick quarterback Kenny Pickett, as well as top wide receiver Diontae Johnson – both via trade. At quarterback the team brought in free agent Russell Wilson and 2021 first-round pick Justin Fields via a trade with the Chicago Bears to compete for the starting job. At receiver the Steelers had a long-running pursuit of Brandon Aiyuk, but never got a deal done before Aiyuk re-signed with the San Francisco 49ers. The Steelers’ new-look offense will get its first shot to show what in can do in the season opener on Sunday, at home against the Atlanta Falcons.

Wilson will get the start for the Steelers at quarterback. He won the job in the preseason, after completing 10 of his 12 passes for 83 yards.
Meanwhile, the Falcons made their own notable quarterback move this offseason. They signed former Minnesota Vikings signal caller Kirk Cousins in free agency, moving on from Taylor Heinicke and Desmond Ridder.
The Falcons also have a new head coach, with Arthur Smith getting fired after a 7-10 season in 2023. After reportedly considering Bill Belichick early on in the process the team ended up hiring Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris. Morris was previously with the Falcons from 2015-2020 as a defensive assistant, defensive coordinator, and briefly interim head coach in 2020.
