Ovechkin continues the Great Chase as East leading Capitals welcomes the Ducks into D.C.

Having alternated wins and losses over their last 11 games, the Washington Capitals return home to Capital One Bank Arena on Tuesday night as they welcome the Anaheim Ducks into the nation’s capital for the first of two meetings between the teams this season with Alexander Ovechkin closing in on the National Hockey League’s all-time leading scorer record. Anaheim snapped its three-game losing skid with an overtime win at Carolina on Sunday picking up the first win on their season-longest six-game road trip that wraps up on Saturday night against the defending Cup champion Panthers. This is the first of two meetings between the teams this season and will wrap the series in Anaheim in mid-March.

Ovechkin leads the Capitals with 20 goals this season and now sits 22 goals away from surpassing Wayne Gretzky for the most goals in NHL history. In his 20th season in the league, Ovechkin missed over a month with a broke bone in his leg and has scored a goal in five of the nine games since the return from the injury. With an empty net goal in Saturday’s 4-1 win at Nashville, Ovechkin became just the second player ever. tying Hall of Famer Gordie Howe, as the only players to score 20 goals in 20 consecutive seasons.

Anaheim has struggled offensively ranking next to last in both the power play and goals per game and have scored more than two goals in a game twice in their last six outings.

Washington has won six of the last eight games in this series dating back to November of 2019 including three of the last four in D.C. in that span.
