One of the oldest and fiercest rivalries in the NHL gets renewed on Friday when the Chicago Blackhawks visit the Detroit Red Wings.

Friday night is rivalry night in the NHL, with a meeting between the Chicago Blackhawks (14-25-2) and Detroit Red Wings (18-18-4) at Little Caesars Arena. This will be the 836th meeting between the two teams, making it one of the most-played series in league history. It’s the second matchup between these two this year. Back in early November the Red Wings went into Chicago and beat the Blackhawks 4-1. Center Dylan Larkin and right winger Alex DeBrincat each had a goal and an assist in that one – Larkin assistant DeBrincat to open the scoring with two second to go in the first preriod, then DeBrincat assisted Larkin on the game-winner midway through the second period.

Detroit comes into this game playing some of its best hockey of the season as of late. After winning three games in a row in late October, the Red Wings hadn’t won more than two games in a row until this current streak of five wins in a row. The streak started last Sunday and includes wins over the Washington Capitals, Pittsburgh Penguins, Columbus Blue Jackets, Winnipeg Jets, and most recently the Ottawa Senators.

In that game on Tuesday the Senators nearly ended Detroit’s winning streak. Ottawa was up 2-1, but Joe Veleno scored to tie the game in the third period before Patrick Kane won it on an overtime power play goal. Detroit dominated that game at the face-off dot winning 55.6 percent of the time.
