Winnipeg Jets look to avoid another first-round exit as they open their series with the St. Louis Blues on Saturday

The Winnipeg Jets piled up a franchise-record 116 points and 56 wins this season en route to winning the team’s first-ever Presidents’ Trophy. After a disappointing first-round exit in 2024, the Jets open the Stanley Cup playoffs on Saturday afternoon when they host the St. Louis Blues in Game 1 at Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg. The Blues clinched a playoff berth on Tuesday with a 6-1 victory over the Utah Hockey Club, eliminating the Calgary Flames for the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

Winnipeg won’t have left wing Nikolaj Ehlers to open the playoffs after he re-aggravated an injured foot on Sunday. However, they are expected to have centers Gabriel Vilardi (upper body) and Rasmus Kupari (concussion) available. Two-time Vezina Trophy winner Connor Hellebuyck looks to erase last spring’s shaky effort against the Colorado Avalanche after leading the league with 47 wins, a 2.00 goals-against average and eight shutouts. Kyle Connor leads the club with 41 goals and 97 poins while Mark Scheifele tallied 39 goals.

St. Louis starts the series without center Dylan Holloway, who had 26 goals and 63 points in 77 games, as deals with a lower-body injury that has had him sidelined since April 3. Jordan Kyrou is the goal-scoring leader on the club with 36 while Robert Thomas scored 21 among his team-best 81 points. Jordan Binnington, who backstopped the Blues to their lone Stanley Cup in 2019, was 28-22-5 in 56 games with a 2.69 GAA and .900 save percentage this season.

The Jets took three of the four meetings between the Central Division rivals this season, most recently a 3-1 win on home ice on April 7. St. Louis finished 35-18-7 under coach Jim Montgomery after Drew Bannister was fired in November following a 9-12-1 start. Winnipeg allowed an NHL-low 190 goals and were third in the league with 275 goals scored.
