After overtime heroics by Alexander Ovechkin, the Washington Capitals look to take a 2-0 series lead against the Montreal Canadiens on Wednesday.

If this second game of this series on Wednesday between the Washington Capitals and Montreal Canadiens plays out anything like the opener did, we are in for a huge treat. And an even better series. Montreal punched well above its seeding in the opener forcing Washington into overtime where the Capitals ultimately prevailed 3-2. Washington is favored tonight to protect home-ice advantage with a -195 line in its favor. The regular season series between these two was very close as well with the Capitals winning it 2-1. The last game they played in the regular season also came down to a 3-2 win in overtime but Nick Suzuki played hero scoring the winning goal in the extra period. It seems reasonably to expect more heroics from these team stars again tonight.

No star was bigger in Game 1 than the Great Eight Alexander Ovechkin, who has been making headlines all season by passing Wayne Gretzky as the NHL all-time leading goal scorer. But even Ovechkin checked an item off his career bucket list on Monday by scoring his first playoff overtime goal to win the game. That was after Ovi scored the first goal of the game. He easily won the first star of the game while also adding an assist on the only other goal in the game by Anthony Beauvillier in the second period. Logan Thompson was a huge factor earning the second star, stopping 33 shots by the Canadiens.

Things were looking like the Capitals would cruise to victory with Washington holding a 2-0 lead heading into the third period. But Montreal didn’t back down, making its first playoff appearance since the Stanley Cup finals in 2021. Cole Caufield scored the first goal of the night for the Canadiens on the power play midway through the third. Then their captain Suzuki stepped up huge once again, scoring the game-tying goal. Sam Montembeault showed up huge in net. The Canadiens goaltender stopped 29 of 31 shots in regulation of his Stanley Cup playoff debut.
