The Islanders are just on the outside looking in of the competitive Eastern Conference wild card picture. Coming into Wednesday they’re the first team out of a playoff spot, one point behind the Montreal Canadiens for the final Wild Card spot. At the same time, the Islanders are one of four teams within three points of the Canadiens, so they need to keep winning to avoid getting jumped in the standings.
Currently the Islanders have points in three games in a row, with all three going to overtime. However they’ve lost their last two – falling 4-3 to the Calgary Flames in overtime on Saturday and then 4-3 in a shootout to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday. Both of those games were at home, and Wednesday’s game will be the final game of a four-game homestand.
The Canucks are five points behind the St. Louis Blues in the Western Conference Wild Card standings, but do have the Flames between them and a playoff spot in the standings. Vancouver also has two games in hand on St. Louis.
Vancouver won its last time out. The Canucks beat the New Jersey Devils 4-3 in a shootout in their most recent game on Monday.
