The Washington Capitals try to buy themselves some breathing room in the Eastern Conference playoff picture when they take on the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday.
Entering play on Tuesday, the Washington Capitals (36-27-10) do hold a playoff position – but not by much. They’re sitting in the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, the second Wild Card spot. At the same time, they’re just one standings point behind the Philadelphia Flyers for third place in the Metropolitan Division, with three games in hand. However, they also have the Detroit Red Wings right behind them in the Wild Card picture, tied in points (but Washington has two games in hand on Detroit). The Capitals’ playoff picture can move quite a bit over the final nine games of the season, making every game crucial, starting with Tuesday night’s trip to the KeyBank Center to take on the Buffalo Sabres (35-35-5).

In the first matchup between these teams back on Nov. 22 in Washington, the Capitals came out on top 4-3 in overtime. Dylan Strome led the Capitals with a goal and an assist in that game.
