The slumping Blackhawks wrap road trip in Saturday matinee against the Devils

Losers of six of their last seven games, the Chicago Blackhawks skate into Newark on Saturday afternoon to face off against the New Jersey Devils in the first of two meetings between the clubs this season as New Jersey aims for its fifth straight win in this series. The Devils have won three of their last five games overall but are split 2-2 on their current five-game home stand where they have struggled to find consistency on the offensive end. Chicago has lost 12 of their last 15 games dating back to their lone two-game winning streak in early November and have scored three goals or less in 13 times in that span.

The Devils duo of center Jack Hughes and winger Jasper Bratt have combined for 77 points in New Jersey’s first 32 games with each tallying 26 assists and have posted identical numbers on the NHL’s top ranked power play scoring four goals and adding 13 assists each. Hughes, the number one overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, has five multi-point games in his last seven outings and is seven assists away from 200 for his career while Bratt is two points shy of 400 for his eight-year career.

Last season’s Rookie of the Year Connor Bedard leads the Blackhawks with 24 points on the campaign and appears to be finding the groove Chicago had hoped for when selecting him first overall in the 2023 Draft. Bedard has seven points in six December games including three points in Thursday’s 5-4 loss against the Islanders.

New Jersey has won five of the last six meetings in this series on home ice including each of the last three as the Blackhawks have just one road win against the Devils since October of 2016,
