It’s been a preseason to forget to the New Jersey Devils (1-5-0), who close out their warmup slate on Thursday night when they take on the Philadelphia Flyers (3-3-0) at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. It’s a new day for the Devils, who hired former Toronto Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe in May after Lindy Ruff was let go in March. New Jersey missed the playoffs for the fifth time in six years after reaching the second round in 2023. The Flyers haven’t made the playoffs since 2020 and coach John Tortorella returns for his third season behind the bench.

The Devils dropped a 5-4 decision to the New York Rangers on Tuesday to fall to 0-3-0 on the road. Kevin Labanc scored twice in the loss. Philadelphia has lost its last two preseason games, most recently a 4-1 road loss to the Boston Bruins on Tuesday in which it was outshot 34-14. Travis Konecny had the lone goal for the Flyers.

Young defenseman Luke Hughes, a Calder Trophy finalist last season, hasn’t resumed skating is is five to seven weeks away from playing due to a shoulder injury. New Jersey won’t have its full squad in Philadelphia on Thursday as it opens the season on Friday at the O2 Arena in Prague, Czechia, against the Buffalo Sabres.

The only injury the Flyers are dealing with is rookie right wing Samu Tuomaala, who practiced on Wednesday in a non-contact jersey, according to Jordan Hall of NBC Sports Philadelphia. The biggest new addition is likely to be 19-year-old forward Matvei Michkov, the team’s first-round pick in 2023. His 41 points (19 goals) in 48 Kontinental Hockey League games last season are the second-most by a teenager in that circuit.
