New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabres get the 2024-25 NHL season under way in Prague, Czechia, on Friday

The New Jersey Devils and Buffalo Sabres open the 2024-25 NHL season on Friday when they face off at O2 Arena in Prague, Czechia, for the first of two games in the Czech capital city between the clubs. New Jersey finished 38-39-5 last season, missing the playoffs for the fifth time in the last six seasons after reaching the second round in the 2023 postseason. The Sabres, meanwhile, extended their NHL record playoff drought to 13 seasons after a 39-37-6 campaign, their second straight winning record after 10 consecutive sub-.500 seasons. Both teams enter the season with new coaches. Former Toronto Maple Leafs bench boss Sheldon Keefe is now with the Devils while Lindy Ruff returned to Buffalo after he was fired by New Jersey last March.

The Devils won’t have defenseman and Calder Trophy finalist Luke Hughes available for more than a month as he is sidelined with a shoulder injury. The troubles on the blueline don’t stop there, as Topias Vilen is out for three to four weeks with an upper-body issue and Brett Pesce (lower leg) didn’t make the trip to Prague.

New Jersey picked up goalie Jakob Markström from the Calgary Flames, hoping to address a sore spot. The Devils posted just one shutout last season en route to a 3.12 goals-against average and .896 save percentage among five goalies. Markström, meanwhile, had a 2.78 GAA and .905 save percentage last season and is two seasons removed from being the Vezina Trophy runner-up.

Defenseman Rasmus Dahlin, just 24, was named the Sabres’ captain, replacing the departed Kyle Okposo. Checking line center Ryan McLeod came over from the Edmonton Oilers and Buffalo also added forwards Jason Zucker and Nicolas Aubé-Kubel in free agency. A big question is whether Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen can manufacture 34 quality starts in net once again, with youngster Devon Levi waiting in the wings.

Regional restrictions may apply.
