Injury plagued Oilers wrap up their four-game road trip in series finale against the Ducks

Off their first shutout loss since December, the Edmonton Oilers head into Monday’s nights contest against the Anaheim Ducks nervously looking over their shoulders as the playoff chase heats up as the defending Western Conference Champions are in danger of falling into a Wild Card spot with just six games remaining on the regular season schedule. Edmonton, who has been rattled by injuries late into the season, have been without leading scorers Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl for a handful of games but both are expected to return in time for the playoffs that start in two weeks. Anaheim has been eliminated from playoff contention but is 4-4 in their last eight games and have won three of their last four games on home ice.

With its stars on the shelf, the Oilers scoring responsibilities fall to the very capable hands of center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and winger Zach Hyman who have combined for 47 goals this season. Nugent-Hopkins, the number one overall pick in the 2011 NHL Draft, has spent his entire career with Edmonton and is one point shy of his ninth career 50-point campaign. Hyman, in his fourth season with the Oilers is three goals away from his third straight 30-goals season.

Anaheim features four 20-goal scorers with centers Mason McTavish and Leo Carlsson tied with wingers Troy Terry and Frank Vatrano for the team lead though McTavish leads the Ducks with six goals on the power play. Carlsson, the second overall selection in the 2023 NHL Draft, ended March with four goals in three games while McTavish has posted career highs in each of his four seasons in the NHL has three goals in three games against Edmonton this season.

Despite the Ducks leading the season series 2-1, Edmonton has controlled the series of late winning 11 of the last 14 dating back to October of 2021.
