The Dallas Stars kick off the playoffs on Saturday night when they host the Colorado Avalanche in the first game of their best-of-seven series. The Stars finished the regular season at 50-26-6 and 106 points, but they lost their last seven games. It was not a good end to the season for the Stars as they scored three or fewer goals in five of those seven losses and they gave up five or more goals in five of the games as well. Two of the losses came in overtime, but they lost by at least two goals in the other five. Despite that, they still did enough to finish in second place in the Central Division and earn home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs. The Stars played the Avalanche three times this season and lost two of them. They won the first meeting, but lost the second 6-3. In the third and final meeting of the regular season the Avalanche won 4-3 in overtime. The Stars are hoping they can turn things around and win a crucial first game of the series on Saturday night.

The Avalanche, though, are hoping to take advantage of the slumping Stars and get a huge road win and take over home-ice advantage. The Avalanche also stumbled a bit down the stretch as they lost three of their last five, but they did get a win in their last game against the Anaheim Ducks.

The road win in Anaheim pushed their record to 49-29-4 on the season and they finished with 102 points. That was four back of the Stars and five ahed of the Minnesota Wild who is the top wild card in the Western Conference.

The winner of the Stars and Avalanche will get the winner of the Winnipeg Jets and St. Louis Blues in the second round.
