The New York Islanders try to avoid five losses in a row when they face off for the final time this season against the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday.

The New York Islanders go for the season series win when they travel to take on the Carolina Hurricanes Sunday. New York is up 2-1 after beating Carolina back at the end of January by a 3-2 final in overtime. Brock Nelson scored the game winner in the extra period after the Islanders got down two goals early scoring three unanswered goals to complete the comeback. But the Islanders are now back 18 points of the Hurricanes in the Metropolitan division and are trying to end a four-game losing streak. Carolina is subsequently the heavy favorite tonight with a -280 line in its favor to tie this series in the finale.

The Hurricanes are coming off a convincing 4-1 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Friday. Montreal scored the first goal of the game but Carolina bounced back in a big way scoring four unanswered goals. Sebastian Aho and Taylor Hall scored 2:24 apart in the second period to pull away from the Canadiens. The Hurricanes have now won 10 of their last 12 games. Carolina is locked into second place in their division standings behind Washington and should have home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

New York is playing on back-to-back nights after dropping to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday 5-3. Tampa Bay dominated for most of the game getting up 4-0 at it peak. New York didn’t score until the third but they showed some fight getting within one goal with more than half of the final period left. Unfortunately for the Islanders, they couldn’t muster any more offense and Tampa iced the game with an empty-net goal. The Islanders still trail four teams if they are going to make a run at the playoffs. This is a must-win game.
