Off their third straight first-round playoff loss, the Los Angeles Kings open their season against the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday.

Thirteen seasons since their last playoff appearance, the Buffalo Sabres open their 2024-25 National Hockey League home schedule Thursday night against the Los Angeles Kings as the Sabres look for their first win of the year after dropping a pair of contests to New Jersey in the Global Series games in Prague last week. The Sabres were outscored 7-2 in Europe and things don’t get any easier this week as Buffalo plays the Kings and the defending Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers before the weekend is over. The Kings don’t play at home until a week before Halloween as Los Angeles starts the campaign with a whopping seven-game road trip.

The Kings acquired goalie Darcy Kemper in the offseason after two subpar years with the Washington Capitals after posting a career-best 37 wins while helping lead Colorado to the Stanley Cup title in 2022. Kemper played for the Kings for one season serving as Jonathan Quick’s backup before being dealt to Arizona at the deadline in 2018 and is on his fifth team in 12 seasons.

Buffalo has not made the playoffs since 2011 and have not won a postseason series since 2007. Head coach Lindy Ruff makes his return to the Sabres bench after he led the club to eight playoffs appearances in 15 seasons before being fired 17 games into the 2013 campaign. Ruff went 571-432-78 in his first stint with Buffalo and helped take the Dallas Stars and New Jersey Devils to the playoffs in his two stops since.

The Sabres have dominated this series of late winning three of the last four, sweeping the Kings last season and have outscored Los Angeles 20-8 with two shutout wins in the last four meetings.
