Clinging to the final Wild Card spot in the East, the Canadiens look to snap their losing skid as road trip rolls into Raleigh against the Hurricanes

On a four-game losing streak, the Montreal Canadiens are holding onto a one-point lead on the top of a five-team logjam in the race of the final Wild Card spot in the National Hockey League’s Eastern Conference and now turn their attention to Friday night’s matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes who have won nine of their last 11 games overall  and have won 11 straight meetings against Montreal. Carolina has been stellar at home this season going 27-8-1 and own the best home record of any team in the league despite losing to Nashville inside the Lenovo Center on Tuesday.

Led by the NHL’s best penalty killing unit, the Hurricanes allow just 2.66 goals per game with 25-year-old Russian goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov experiencing a breakout season. Kochetkov has posted a career-high 25 wins this season but has lost consecutive starts allowing 10 goals in losses to Los Angeles and Nashville over the last six days following a brilliant stretch where he allowed just six goals during a five-game winning streak dating back to late February.

Canadiens center Nick Suzuki ranks 20th in the NHL with his team leading 74 points this season and comes into this game with 22 points in his last 15 games. Suzuki, a first-round selection by Vegas in 2017, broke into the league with Montreal in 2019 and has posted four straight 60-point campaigns. The 25-year-old Ontario native is now just four points shy of breaking his career high of 77 points set last season.

Montreal has not won at Carolina since April of 2016 losing 11 games in a row with each of the last six losses coming by two or more goals.
