Winless Islanders continue western road trip in Denver to face off with the Avalanche
Struggling to find a defensive presence early in the 2024-25 National Hockey League season, the Colorado Avalanche return to Ball Arena Monday night in search of its first win of the year against the winless New York Islanders. The Avs have surrendered 14 goals through two games in consecutive losses to Vegas and Columbus, while the Islanders dropped an opening night overtime loss to Utah and were shutout on the first game of their three-game road trip in Dallas on Saturday. Colorado has not struggled to score tallying 4.0 goals per game and are leading the league on the power play converting 42.9% of opportunities with the man advantage.

Avalanche winger Mikko Rantanen leads the team with three goals after a hat trick on opening night in Vegas scoring a goal in all three periods. Rantanen, in his 10th season with Colorado, has tallied four consecutive 30-goal seasons and has 100 goals in his last 164 games including a career high 55 goals during the 2022-23 campaign.
In his third season with the Islanders, Bo Horvat comes into this year with three consecutive 30-goal seasons and is tied for the team lead in goals this year. Horvat was acquired by New York in a trade deadline deal with Vancouver who selected the Ontario native with the ninth overall pick in the 2013 NHL Draft.
The Avalanche have dominated this series of late winning six of the last seven overall and eight of the last nine games in Denver. The Islanders have not won at Colorado since December 2018, a span of four straight trips without a win, but have lost each of the last two in overtime or in a shootout.
