The New Jersey Devils (2-1-0, 4 points) look for a third consecutive victory on Thursday night when they host the two-time defending champion Florida Panthers (3-2-0, 6 points) in their home opener at the Prudential Center in Newark. Florida has lost the first two games of its five-game road trip and comes to New Jersey on the back end of back-to-back games. The Devils, meanwhile, learned on Wednesday that goalie Jacob Markstrom is likely to miss at least two weeks due to a lower-body injury. Markstrom started the first two games and worked the third period in relief of Jake Allen in Monday’s victory. Nico Daws was recalled from the American Hockey League’s Utica Comets to replace Markstrom.

The Panthers lost their second game in a row on Wednesday night, falling 4-1 to the Detroit Red Wings. Brad Marchand scored the only goal of the game for Florida to cut the deficit to 2-1 at 14:05 of the second period before the Red Wings added two late empty-net goals to set the final margin. Marchand has a team-high three goals and five points, sharing the scoring lead with Anton Lundell, who has two goals and five points after assisting on Marchand’s tally on Wednesday.

Dawson Mercer scored twice as New Jersey ended its three-game season-opening road trip on Monday with a 3-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Timo Meier got the Devils on the board with a power-play goal at 15:47 of the first period and Mercer’s marker at 11:09 of the second gave New Jersey the lead for good. Mercer added an empty-net goal with 57 seconds left before Columbus scored with 21 seconds remaining. Mercer, Meier, Jesper Bratt and Connor Brown have two goals each, with Bratt and Luke Hughes sharing the team lead with four points.

The Devils are looking for their second straight playoff appearance, something the franchise hasn’t done since a run of 13 consecutive postseason trips ended in 2011. Florida has played in the last three Stanley Cup Finals, winning the last two.
