The Toronto Maple Leafs host Game 1 of the second round when their Atlantic division rival the Florida Panthers come to town Monday.

The second round of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs is upon us and the Toronto Maple Leafs will be hosting as they face a tough test in the defending champion Florida Panthers. The first game of this series is on Monday night. The Maple Leafs in rare territory as they’ve made the playoffs in the last nine years but they only made it past the first round once before this season. The Panthers are obviously the defending champs and look like they are on a mission once again dominating their last round against the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-1. Tampa finished with more points than Florida in the regular season but none of it mattered. Toronto finished with 10 more points than the Panthers this season winning the Atlantic division. Little of that matters to the oddsmakers who are favoriting the Panthers with a -125 line even on the road on Monday.

Toronto won its first series 4-2 over the Ottawa Senators in the Battle of Ontario. The Maple Leafs looked like they were going to cruise to victory gaining a 3-0 series lead but the Senators made it too close for comfort for Toronto. There were three overtime games in that series and Toronto lost steam after that and dropped two consecutive games. The Maple Leafs won the series finale 4-2 but Ottawa made a strong comeback nearly forcing a Game 7. Auston Matthews and William Nylander put Toronto up 2-0 but Ottawa scored consecutive goals to tie the game. Max Pacioretty saved the day and the series for the Maple Leafs grabbing the go-ahead goal with less than six minutes left in regulation to excise their first round demons.

Florida meanwhile only lost Game 3 of its last series against Tampa Bay in really what was the Panthers only off night of the series. Florida dominated in Game 5 winning 6-3 to wrap up the in-state rivalry series. The game was tied midway through the second period but Sam Bennett changed that late in the period to get the go-ahead goal. The Panthers would score three unanswered to close out the game and the series. The Panthers have the recent experience to go far and be the favorite throughout this series. Let’s see if Toronto can buck the trend.
