The Buffalo Sabres and Pittsburgh Penguins will square off in their first preseason game of the year on Saturday.

The Buffalo Sabres will host the Pittsburgh Penguins in this first preseason game for both clubs. The Sabres are still on their quest to end their postseason drought that has lasted since 2011. No Buffalo fan needs reminding that the Sabres missed the playoffs for the 13th year in a row which is tied for the longest drought in pro sports along with another fellow New York team the Jets. The good news for the Sabres is that they’ve been on the playoff presepice for the last couple of years now. In 2022-23 Buffalo tallied 91 points and 84 last season. They were close to securing a spot in the Atlantic division both years. One of the team’s biggest trades last season came when they traded Casey Mittelstadt for the young 23-year-old Bowen Byram. This is Byram’s first Sabres training camp and it is going well so far as he has been placed on the top defense pair alongside Owen Power. Byram is a great two-way player and he should be making a big impact in Upstate New York for some time to come.

Pittsburgh meanwhile is in unfamiliar territory after missing the playoffs in back-to-back years. That hasn’t happened since the Penguins missed the playoffs from 2002-2006. That’s when they drafted Sidney Crosby in 2005 and it was the first time Sid the Kid missed the playoffs in consecutive years. That hasn’t stopped Crosby from being selfless after he signed a two-year contract to stay with the only team he’s ever played for extending him with Pittsburgh through the 2026-27 season. Even though he’s one of the greatest to ever play, he will not receive a raise after he asked for the average annual value of $8.7 million. Penguins fans are hoping his selflessness will lead to adding more talent to get back to the playoffs after just missing the postseason in back-to-back years.
