Riding three-game losing streak, the Penguins continue western roadtrip against the struggling Oilers

With five losses in their first seven games, the Edmonton Oilers look far removed from the team that won the Western Conference Championship and played in the Stanley Cup Final in June as they wrap up a two-game home stand on Friday night against Sidney Crosby and the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins have lost three straight games including the first two games of their current four-game road trip after a shootout loss at Calgary on Tuesday night. Edmonton has won six straight meetings against Pittsburgh including each of the last three games played inside Rogers Place dating back to December of 2019.

Penguins center Evgeni Malkin leads the team with 11 points on the season and ranks third in the NHL with nine assists despite being held without a point in the last three games. Malkin, who has spent the entirety of his 19-year NHL career with Pittsburgh, scored his 500th career goal in a 6-5 overtime win against Buffalo on Oct. 16 capping four consecutive multi-point games prior to his current scoreless streak.

Connor McDavid, the number one overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft, has gotten off to a slow start this season despite leading the team with eight points through his first seven games. McDavid has seven 100-point seasons in his last eight years and last season became the first player since Penguins great Mario Lemieux to tally a 100-assist season.

The Oilers special teams have struggled mightily this season ranked dead last in the league on the penalty kill and are 28th in the NHL on the power play. Edmonton has conceded a power play goal in six of seven games including each of the last four contests.
