New York Rangers and new captain J.T. Miller look to start rebound as visit New Jersey Devils on Sunday in the preseason opener both teams.

The New York Rangers open the 2025-26 season with a new coach in Mike Sullivan and a new captain in center J.T. Miller as they look to rebound from a nightmarish season in which they missed the playoffs just a season after winning the Presidents’ Trophy. The Rangers open their preseason on Saturday afternoon at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, against their Metropolitan Division rivals, the New Jersey Devils. New Jersey limped to the finish after a strong start and lost to the Carolina Hurricanes in a tough five-game first-round series.

Sullivan brings a championship pedigree to New York, winning two Stanley Cups while leading the Pittsburgh Penguins from December 2015 until he was fired in April. The Rangers plan to shift center Mika Zibanejad to right wing on Miller’s line in an attempt to goose an offense that ranked 12th in the NHL last season. The team added defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov on a seven-year contract and dealt blue-liner K’Andre Miller to the Hurricanes for defenseman Scott Morrow and 2026 first- and second-round picks. Winger Taylor Raddysh came to Manhattan on a two-year free-agent deal.

The Devils, meanwhile, traded grinding wing Eric Haula to the Nashville Predators, lost veteran winger Tomáš Tatar to Switzerland and saw defenseman Brian Dumoulin and centers Curtis Lazar and Justin Dowling depart in free agency. New Jersey signed 2019 fifth-round pick Arseni Gritsyuk, 24, after he played the last five seasons in the Kontinental Hockey League, signed wingers Connor Brown to a four-year deal and Evgenii Dadonov on a one-year contract.

While opposing fans aren’t yet chanting “1994” at the Rangers, their Stanley Cup drought stands at 31 years and counting and New York has missed the postseason twice in the last five seasons. Sullivan is the team’s fourth coach since 2020-21, as well. The Devils returned to the playoffs for the second time in three seasons but have made just three postseason appearances since reaching the Stanley Cup Final in 2012.
