As the trade deadline looms, the Red Wings aims to continue its playoff push against Ovechkin and the division leading Capitals

Despite a four-game losing streak, the Detroit Red Wings are fighting for a playoff spot entering the weekend just one point behind Ottawa for the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference as they skate into D.C. for a Friday night tilt against the Atlantic Division leading Washington Capitals. Since their six-game winning streak in mid-January, the Capitals are 7-7 but are on a two-game winning streak after a 3-2 overtime victory over the Rangers on Wednesday. Caps winger Alex Ovechkin leads the team with 32 goals this season as he closes in on the NHL’s all-time goal scoring record now just 10 goals away from Wayne Gretzky’s mark of 894 goals.

In his 20th season, Ovechkin has posted his fourth consecutive 30-goal campaign and 19th overall since the Capitals selected him with the top pick in the 2004 NHL Draft. With 10 goals in his last 12 games, Ovechkin has gone full throttle in chasing down Gretzky’s mark and with his next point will become just the 11th player ever surpass 1,600 points in a career.

Detroit winger Lucas Raymond has a team high 63 points this season but has been held scoreless in his last five games, his longest scoring drought of the campaign. Raymond, a first-round selection by the Red Wings in the 2020 NHL Draft, has equaled his career high of 41 assists and is 10 points away from breaking his career high of 72 points set last season.

This is the second of three games between the teams this season as the Red Wings will wrap the series in D.C. on the 18th. The series is split 5-5 over the last 10 meetings with both teams winning a pair in the nation’s capital in that span.
