The Toronto Maple Leafs go for the season series win against the Detroit Red Wings on the final day of the regular season.

The Toronto Maple Leafs host the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night for this regular season finale. The Maple Leafs have clinched a playoff spot winning the first seed in the Atlantic division and will host the Ottawa Senators who wrapped up the first Wild Card spot. The Red Wings were officially eliminated from playoff contention earlier this week and now have missed the postseason nine years in a row which seems impossible for this storied franchise. For reference, the last time Detroit didn’t make the playoffs before this streak was 1990. Toronto leads this season series 2-1 and are the -135 favorites to win the series tonight at home.

Detroit is trying to end this season on a high by winning its fourth game in a row after beating the New Jersey Devils 5-2 on Wednesday. Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin was the first star of the game scoring his 30th goal of the season and adding an assist. Detroit kept New Jersey scoreless through two periods. The Devils got within one goal late in the third but Alex DeBrincat scored the fourth goal of the game with less than three minutes left to give the Red Wings extra cushion. An empty-net goal with 10 seconds left iced the game.

Toronto is trying to one up the Red Wings by winning its fifth game in a row to end the regular season. The Maple Leafs are getting hot at just the right moment at least giving them a good shot to get out of the first round of the playoffs. Toronto is coming off a dominating victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday winning 4-0. Goalie Anthony Stolarz earned the first star and the shutout by stopping all 35 shots. It was a tremendous feat as it was Stolarz’s third consecutive shutout. The game was a lot closer than the final score would indicate as it was 1-0 with just five minutes remaining in the game.
