That’ll be the case on Monday night, when the Detroit Red Wings (30-27-6) visit the Ottawa Senators (32-25-5) at the Canadian Tire Centre. The two Atlantic Division foes would most likely need a Wild Card bit to reach the postseason, and are right near each other in the standings entering Monday.

As play begins on Monday, the Senators hold one of two Wild Card spots ahead of the crowded group of teams battling to get in. The Senators have 69 points in the standings. Detroit is among the teams in the crowd chasing, with 66 points. Ottawa does have a game in hand on Detroit, and the majority of the other teams behind in the standings.

Detroit and Ottawa have already faced each other twice this year, with the home team winning each game. Both games have been close. The Senators picked up a 2-1 win back on Dec. 5, and then on Jan. 7 it was the Red Wings picking up a 3-2 overtime in their building.

Coming into this meeting, Ottawa’s stamina will be tested. The Senators played on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday last week with all three games going to overtime. They lost the first one 5-4 in a shootout to the Washington Capitals, then won 4-3 at the Chicago Blackhawks and at home against the New York Rangers by the same score.
