With 11 games remaining, Buffalo trails the New York Islanders and New York Rangers for the final postseason spot by eight points, while the Flyers are seven points back with eight games to play. The Sabres are in danger of extending their NHL-record playoff drought to 14 seasons while Philadelphia last made the postseason in 2020.

Buffalo poured in five goals in the second period while earning their third straight victory on Thursday night in a 7-3 decision over the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins. Jiri Kulich scored twice while Tyson Kozak and Peyton Krebs each had a goal and an assist. The club didn’t have forwards Jordan Greenwway (lower body), Sam Lafferty (groin), Josh Norris (undisclosed) or Jason Zucker (personal) in the victory.

The Flyers potted three first-period goals and held off the Montreal Canadiens for a 6-4 win on home ice Thursday night. Matvei Michkov and captain Sean Couturier each notched two goals and an assist while Nicolas Deslauriers and Tyson Foerster also lit the lamp. Forward Garnet Hathaway (upper body) did not play against Montreal while defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen remains out with an upper-body injury.

Tage Thompson leads the Sabres with 36 goals and 63 points while Alex Tuch has 28 markers. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen is 23-22-4 with a 3.16 goals-against average and .888 save percentage. Travis Konecny is Philadelphia’s top scorer with 24 goals and 69 points while Michkov has 22 tallies. Goalie Samuel Ersson is 20-15-5 with a 3.13 GAA and .882 save percentage.
