Washington Capitals look for a 3rd straight win as they host the Utah Hockey Club on Sunday

The Washington Capitals (36-11-7, 79 points) will hold the best record in the Eastern Conference entering the break for the 4 Nations Face-Off and look for their third straight win on Sunday when they host the Utah Hockey Club (23-23-9, 55 points) at Capital One Arena in Washington. The Hockey Club are six points out of the final wild card in the Western Conference entering play on Sunday while the Capitals are eight points clear of the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers in the East. Utah center Logan Cooley was placed on injured reserve on Tuesday with a lower-body injury while defensemen Robert Bortuzzo and Sean Durzi remain sidelined as well. Washington left wing Sonny Milano hasn’t played since early November with an upper-body injury.

Clayton Keller’s two goals weren’t nearly enough in the Hockey Club’s 7-3 road loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday afternoon. A four-goal flurry in the second period by Carolina made it a 5-2 game. Keller took over the team lead with 20 goals and also tops the club with 59 points. Karel Vejmelka is 12-15-4 in net with a 2.57 goals-against average and .907 save percentage with one shutout.

Jakob Chychrun had a goal and an assist and Alex Ovechkin scored his 879th career goal in the Capitals’ 4-3 road victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night. Chychrun netted the game-winner with 7:55 remaining in the game after Lars Eller tied the contest at 6:23 of the third period. Ovechkin has a team-high 26 goals as he chases Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record of 894 while Dylan Strome has a team-high 52 points. Logan Thompson is 24-2-4 with a 2.18 GAA and .923 save percentage to go with two shutouts.

Washington can complete a season sweep of Utah after winning the first meeting in Salt Lake City 6-2 on Nov. 18.
