Alex Ovechkin continues his quest to surpass Gretzky as the Capitals skate into Buffalo to face the Sabres

Sitting 22 goals away from tying Wayne Gretzky as the National Hockey League’s all-time leading goal scorer, Alex Ovechkin and the Eastern Conference leading Washington Capitals head to Buffalo on Monday night to take on the Sabres for the second of three game between the teams this season. After a promising 11-9-1 start to the 2024-25 campaign, the Sabres have lost 16 of their last 19 games and are in last place in the Eastern Conference 22 points behind Washington and nine points shy of Pittsburgh for the eighth and final playoff spot as the season nears the midway point.

Ovechkin made his return to the Capitals lineup on December 28th after missing six weeks with a broken bone in his leg and promptly scored four goals in his first five games after the injury. The 39-year-old winger has spent his entire career with the Capitals after Washington made him the number one overall selection in the 2004 NHL Draft and has posted 13 40-goal seasons and is on pace for another one this year.

Sabres center Tage Thompson leads Buffalo in goals and points this season having posted eight points in his last six games including a season-high three assists in a 6-5 overtime loss to Colorado on Thursday. Thompson, a first-round pick by St. Louis in the 2016 NHL Draft, was traded to Buffalo after one season with the Blues and is two goals away from his fourth consecutive 20-goal season.

The home team has won six straight games in this series dating back to February of 2023 with four of the six being decided by two or more goals.
