With Alex Ovechkin zeroing in on Wayne Gretzky’s record, the East-leading Washington Capitals take on the Carolina Hurricanes for the first of two meetings over the next nine days.

Now just four goals away from becoming the all-time leading goal scorer in NHL history, Alex Ovechkin leads the Washington Capitals into Raleigh on Wednesday night looking for a second straight road win as they take on the Carolina Hurricanes in a Metropolitan Division matchup of playoff bound teams. Carolina has won 11 of its last 13 games and comes into this game rested, having not played since Sunday, while Washington snapped its losing streak in a hard fought 4-3 road win at Boston on Tuesday. Ovechkin scored career goal No. 891 on a first period power play to move within a hat trick of tying Wayne Gretzky’s long standing goals record.

Despite missing over a month with a broken bone in his leg, Ovechkin leads the Capitals with 38 goals this season and is now two goals away from securing his 14th career 40-goal campaign. The No. 1 overall selection in the 2004 NHL Draft, Ovechkin is tied for fourth in the league in goals and has posted 18 points in his last 16 games with five multi-point efforts in that span.

Paced by its second ranked penalty killing unit, Carolina is eighth in the NHL allowing just 2.66 goals per game, with goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov boasting a .901 save percentage. Kochetkov has accumulated a career-high with 26 wins this season, beating his previous high of 32 set last season.

The season series is split 1-1 so far this season and will conclude in D.C. on April 10. The home team has won each of the last four games, with the last three being decided by two or more goals.
