Off a hat trick in Tuesday’s win against the Islanders, Capitals center Dylan Strome has overtaken Ovechkin for the team lead in points having collected points in eight of his last nine outings. Strome, the third overall selection in the 2015 NHL Draft, spent two and a half seasons with Arizona before being dealt to Chicago during the 2018-19 campaign then landing in D.C. as a free agent in the summer of 2022. The 28-year-old Ontario native has posted career highs in goals, points, and assists this season with none more famous than setting up Ovechkin on his record-breaking goal earlier this month.
In his 20th NHL season, Sidney Crosby leads the Penguins with 89 points this season and is one point shy of his third consecutive 90-point campaign and his ninth overall. Crosby’s 57 assists this season marks the 12th time in his storied career that the 37-year-old center has accumulated 50 or more assists in a season.
Washington has won six of the last seven meetings in Pittsburgh dating back to February of 2021 with four of those six victories coming by two or more goals.
