As Ovechkin nears the scoring record the Capitals look to restart winning streak as road trip wraps against the Sharks
After their five-game winning streak was snapped on Thursday night, Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals conclude their three-game California road trip on Saturday afternoon whei\ n they face off against the San Jose Sharks in the final meeting of the season between the teams. Washington owns the best record in the Eastern Conference including a 10-point cushion over Carolina in the Metropolitan Division with 16 games to play while the Sharks have lost 20 of their last 25 games and currently hold the worst record in the National Hockey League. San Jose beat Washington 2-1 in D.C. back in early-December and has won four of the last six meetings in this series.

With seven goals in his last 10 games, Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin is now just nine goals away from passing Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal scoring mark and has 16 career goals in 28 games against San Jose. In his 20th season with Washington, Ovechkin leads the Capitals in goals despite missing a month due to a broken bone in his leg. Ovi has scored 30 or more goals 19 times and is on pace for his 14th career 40-goals campaign.
Sharks rookie center Macklin Celebrini leads the club with 49 points this season and comes into this game with seven points in his last seven games. Celebrini, the number one overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, tallied an assist on William Eklund’s overtime winner in San Jose’s first meeting against Washington this season.
Despite losing four of the last six games in this series, Washington has won five of the last six in San Jose with all five wins coming by two goals or more.
