Alex Ovechkin continues his historic run as the division leading Washington Capitals face-off against the surging Seattle Kraken on Thursday.

Riding a season long five-game winning streak, the Washington Capitals continue their western road trip as they skate into Climate Pledge Arena on Thursday night to take on the Seattle Kraken in the first of two meetings between the teams this season. Seattle has won three of their last four games, including two in a row on home ice as they aim for their first winning streak of three or more games since November. Capitals center Alexander Ovechkin has a team-high 21 goals on the season and is now 21 goals away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal scoring mark of 894.

Ovechkin, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 NHL Draft, joined Gordie Howe and Ron Francis as the only players in NHL history to score 20 goals in 20 seasons when he scored an empty net goal against Nashville earlier this month. After missing over a month with a broken bone in his leg, Ovechkin has seen his goal scoring pace slow, collecting just six goals in his last 13 games since returning form the injury.

Washington ranks second in the NHL scoring 3.55 goals per game despite having no skater in the top 15 in the league in goals. The Capitals have eight skaters with double digit goals this season, the most of any team in the league.

With three points in Monday’s win over Buffalo, Seattle winger Jared McCann leads the team with 36 points this season and has collected eight points in 10 January games. McCann, in his ninth season, is three assists shy of 200 for his career.

The all-time series is split 3-3 since Seattle joined the league in 2021 and has won two of the three meetings against Washington at home.
