The Carolina Hurricanes face off against the Minnesota Wild for the first of two matchups this month starting on Thursday.

The Minnesota Wild are in the midst of turning it around, when they travel to take on the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night. This is the first time these inter-conference foes will face off this year. They will play for the last time in just a couple of weeks in Minneapolis. The Wild are going for their third win in a row, after they lost five in a row and eight of their previous nine games. After losing in overtime on three occasions in that span, Minnesota is coming off a 3-2 overtime win against Nashville. Carolina is also coming off a 3-0 win over the New York Rangers, and are only two points back of the division lead. The New Jersey Devils and Pittsburgh Penguins both lead the Metropolitan Division standings with 18 points. The Hurricanes will be the considerable -190 favorites to defend home ice tonight.

Carolina was dominant in its performance against the Rangers, scoring a goal in each period at Madison Square Garden. Pyotr Kochetkov made his season-debut in net for the Hurricanes, and he was special pitching a shutout to earn the first star of the game. It was good to have Kochetkov back for Carolina. He missed the start of the season because of a lower-body injury, after he won 27 games with the club last season. Nikolaj Ehlers scored the first goal of the game on the power play. Sean Walker scored late in the second, and then Seth Jarvis ended the scoring with an empty-net goal in the third to ice the game.

Minnesota beat the Nashville Predators in its last game on Tuesday, despite getting outshot 34-24. It looked like it was going to be another tough loss for the Wild, with Steven Stamko scoring the tying goal with just one second left in regulation. Kirill Kaprizov and Zeev Buium both scored on power play goals before that for the Wild. With the goal out of position, Marcus Johansson saved the day scoring the game winner 3:38 in overtime. The road only gets tougher tonight.
