The New York Islanders go for the season-series sweep in Game 2 against the San Jose Sharks on Saturday, after trading for Brayden Schenn.

The San Jose Sharks are on a hot streak when they host the New York Islanders on Saturday night. The Sharks have earned at least a point in their last four games, while the Islanders are looking to avoid losing three straight. New York has the chance to gain sole position of second place in the Metropolitan Division standings, as it is tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins for 75 points. The Hurricanes lead the division with 86 points. San Jose is already on the rise with 65 points, 13 more than the Sharks finished with last season. This is the second and final game between these non-conference foes. The Islanders are looking to sweep the season series after beating the Sharks at home at the beginning of the season on Oct. 21, 4-3. There were five goals in a back-and-forth first period, but New York went up 4-2 early in the second period in what turned out to be the game-deciding goal by Matthew Schaefer. He also added an assist to become the first star of the game. It was New York’s third straight win after losing its first three to open the season. The Islanders kept San Jose winless through its first six games, with the Sharks ending that streak in their next game against the New York Rangers. The Islanders will be the -135 favorite to sweep this series tonight.

The Sharks nearly won their fourth straight game on Friday night, but they fell to the St. Louis Blues in overtime. Robert Thomas scored his second goal of the game for the game-winner 54 seconds into overtime. St. Louis and San Jose swapped goals throughout the game, with Maclin Celebrini and Kiefer Sherwood connecting for San Jose. St. Louis won despite having just 17 shots on net, and just hours earlier, the team traded its captain, Brayden Schenn, to these very New York Islanders. This Islanders team is making the exact push they need at the deadline to make a lengthy playoff run.

The Islanders are trying to bounce back from a 5-3 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on the road on Thursday. LA scored the first three goals of the game, and the Islanders were never able to fully recover. Bo Horvat scored the first goal of the game for the Islanders with just one second remaining in the second period. The Kings scored early in the third to put the game away, although Adam Pelech scored on a shorthanded goal two minutes later. Emil Heineman scored the final goal with just less than two minutes left in regulation, but it wasn’t nearly enough to complete the comeback. Seeing Schenn’s Islanders’ debut is reason enough to tune in tonight.
